Do you recall the first time you faced a decision about sex? Was it well-informed, based on trustworthy information? Did you seek advice from a responsible adult you trusted? For the majority of us, the answer is “No.” Every young individual will eventually make choices regarding sexual behavior. Regrettably, preventable tragedies happen daily because most adolescents lack the necessary knowledge to make responsible decisions.
Comprehensive Sexuality Education provides young people with the vital information they need to safeguard themselves and others—something that abstinence-only programs fail to deliver. Comprehensive Sexuality Education is grounded in current research, not fear, and empowers young people with a solid understanding of sexual health and well-being. Studies have shown that Comprehensive Sexuality Education delays the onset of sexual activity and significantly reduces instances of coercion, disease, suicide, and unintended pregnancy.
New Mexico Sexual Health aims to collaborate with government departments, educators, healthcare professionals, and the community to promote the widespread implementation of comprehensive sex education. NMSH works together with national and international organizations that share similar goals to exchange valuable research and knowledge.
